Speaking of The State

Speaking of The State, here’s a sketch we did in ’93, and then after that, a similar sketch done on SNL last year – I think we’re an inspiration to the major leagues!

  1. They can use all the State influence they can get. I’m a HUGE SNL fan, and was really looking forward to the season premiere last night, then it just…bombed. It was so bad. The cast is great, but there’s just a spark missing. If only you guys could get in there and do some writing or acting! That would be bliss.

  2. Funny, I remember someone saying that was a State skit, thanks for the proof! I also remember thinking that was the funniest SNL skit in some time…should’ve known it was birthed from greatness.

  3. I saw that episode and sketch. I haven’t liked SNL for the past five years at least? Dane Cook is great and the reason I did watch that one, but the sketch is an obvious rip on the State’s sketch a overa decade earlier. Plus the SNL one wasn’t nearly as entertaining. They should give you lots of money. Then you can buy rights to songs for The State’s DVD release.

  4. there’s a very similar sketch by the kids in the hall that came before the state. snl’s is definitely the least amusing, imo.

the line about sleeping through “one of the most eventful late afternoons in human history” is brilliant.

  5. Even SNL writers watch The State skits on YouTube when they hear about the I-pod release and get ideas. Their poop smells too.

  6. Oh yeah I remember watching that and thinking that it was a huge rip from The State. But what I didn’t register until now- they even give the guy the same name?!? SNL, can you sink no lower? And after you guys worked with Amy Poehler too.

  7. They didn’t really commit to it, did they? It’s a guys “girlfriend” so it’s not as harsh as someone’s wife leaving them. It’s 24 hours, instead of two.

I wonder if Jay Mohr came back and wrote this sketch. Well, probably not – since it’s not out right plagarism.

  8. The State version was much funnier. What happened to SNL? It’s not as funny as it used to be back in the day.

I really like Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. Anyone seen that?

  9. OF COURSE the SNL one would make the same joke but take TWICE as long to do it. LONGEST SKITS EVER!

  10. There is also a similar sketch scrawled on the wall of a cave in Lascaux, France.

  11. Yeah I got that just randomly one day and laughed about this fact. I guess they are starting to run out of ideas lately.

I too saw a little bit of the new season and Dane Cook was back. I didn’t really watch it but I did see a bit of new MadTv which was a lot weirder and in a sense funnier. I guess the main thing they can be a little more outrageous on that show, but overall, when it comes to skits there is nothing like the just no holds barred situations and settings of The State and Kids in the Hall and of course the great Monty Python.

  12. The State one was much better. What was SNL thinking? No telepathy? No Martians?

What’s the KITH sketch that you’re all talking about?

  13. There’s a KITH sketch where an office worker passes out on his desk for 20 minutes or something. His wife leaves him, he gets fired etc.
